Stash and Dash

I have a rule at home - nothing goes in the attic. Even at my most untidy and disorganised it was a rule. Looking at the mess was bad enough without thinking there was yet another placed stuffed with stuff. We don't have a shed either, for pretty much the same reason.

We do, however, have a garage and although ours is less packed than some - we keep the car in it it can still be a cluttered space. It's so easy to put something on a shelf in there rather than just dealing with it. It's been particularly stuffed over the past five months or so as we've been clearing two houses and taking things either to the tip or to the charity shop.

Our holiday has taken a bit of a rubbish turn as I've picked up a cold somewhere and have felt pretty rubbish, certainly not well enough to go out gadding So what better than to stand in a dusty garage for a couple of hours sorting out junk?

Here we are at the start of the clearing, stuff everywhere.

Here we are at the end, still not a place of great beauty, but much better. There are two shelving units on the left side, one of them is only half full now and the other isn't as crammed as it was. As you can see, we were able to get rid of one set of shelves altogether, now I have plenty of space to use my lovely potting table.

I've added a list of things we got rid of to the Decluttered 2017 page.

  1. Even though it is a garage I still like to see everthing tidy, It is good for the soul to be organised.

    1. We had already started pulling things out when I took the first picture, it's never untidy there, but it wasn't well organised. It makes more sense now as things that are the same live together, rather than things being put in a place just because the place is there.

  2. Well done you! We don't have an attic, but have done and how tempting it is to shove stuff through the hatch ten forget about it.

I'll never understand why people have such rammed full garages, but then I'm betting their houses have that stark minimal look with no personality, as all their 'stuff' is in the garage and their cars are out on the drive.

    1. We had that conversation with our neighbour a couple of weeks ago when he was sorting out his garage. "I do this every three months, where does it all come from?" he said despairingly!

I think you'd possibly think my house was a bit stark if you saw it!

  3. What better pick me up than to spend time doing something to make your life easier and it costs nothing.

    1. Being under the weather while off work has actually been a good thing. We've done lots of those little things that get put off - Dan even got his hair cut *yay*. But those tasks that feel like a waste of a weekend are done and haven't taken anything away from our day.

  4. We have adopted the same rule since moving here only Christmas decorations are allowed in the attic cupboards (they are attic bedrooms). It was a nightmare getting rid of years worth of rubbish from our last attic.

    1. I can imagine! We do have an understairs cupboard with some not often used stuff in, but it's all organised so shouldn't give us too much trouble.
